FLUX.1 Pro (August 2024) is the proprietary flagship from Black Forest Labs — the team that built Stable Diffusion 1/2/XL before leaving Stability. Available via BFL API and Replicate at $0.05/image, also FAL and Together. Photo-realistic, strong on aesthetics, decent prompt fidelity. Two cheaper open-weight siblings exist: FLUX.1 [dev] (non-commercial weights) and FLUX.1 [schnell] (Apache 2.0, fast distillation).
Editor's verdict
Currently the strongest commercial text-to-image for aesthetics-first work — product photography mockups, marketing visuals, character art. Beats DALL-E 3 on raw look in most blind compares. Weakness: text-in-image is mediocre (use Imagen 3 if posters), and prompt fidelity for complex multi-subject scenes is below Imagen 3 too. Schnell version is the pragmatic open-source pick if you want to self-host.
