Falcon 180B (September 2023) is the Technology Innovation Institute (TII, Abu Dhabi)'s 180B-parameter open-weights model — at release the largest open-source LLM on the market. Trained on 3.5T tokens of RefinedWeb. The release was geopolitically significant: Gulf states declaring open-source AI ambition. Custom Falcon-180B-TII licence (free for research and commercial use under terms; not Apache).
Editor's verdict
By 2026 Falcon 180B is a relic — Llama 3.3 70B beats it on most benchmarks at less than half the size, with cleaner licensing. Self-hosting 180B params is a serious undertaking (8×A100 minimum). Worth knowing as historical context for the open-source race; not a practical choice for new builds. TII has since released Falcon 2 11B and a Falcon Mamba 7B, both more relevant for current self-host work.
