DALL-E 3 (October 2023) is OpenAI's text-to-image model. Two release vehicles: as-is via API at $0.04/image (1024×1024 standard) or $0.08 (HD), and through ChatGPT Plus where prompts get auto-rewritten by GPT-4 for richer composition. Strong prompt fidelity, photographic and illustration ranges, but stricter content filter than peers.
Editor's verdict
The default for ChatGPT users — the in-product UX (auto-rewrite, easy iteration) is genuinely smoother than going to standalone image services. For API-direct work, FLUX.1 Pro and Recraft V3 produce better aesthetics at similar prices, and Imagen 3 nails text-in-image more reliably. Pick DALL-E 3 when you want one OpenAI bill or when ChatGPT-Plus is already the workflow.
