Cost estimate
Claude 3 Opus was Anthropic's flagship model in 2024, offering 200K context, vision, and tool use at $15/$75 per million tokens. It built Claude's reputation for steerability and long-form reasoning. By 2026 it's been superseded by Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.7 on virtually every axis, but it remains widely deployed on AWS Bedrock and Vertex AI for enterprise stacks that haven't migrated.
Editor's verdict
Don't pick this for a new project — Sonnet 4.6 outperforms it at one fifth the price. The reason it's still on the leaderboard: enterprise teams locked into Bedrock or Vertex without Sonnet 4 access yet, and reproducibility for academic eval suites. If you've inherited a Claude 3 Opus codebase, plan a migration window — same prompts usually work on Sonnet 4.6 with minor tuning.
