xAI

Elon Musk's AI company, founded 2023, builder of the Grok model family — distinguished by direct integration with X (formerly Twitter) and very large GPU buildouts.

xAI is the AI company founded by Elon Musk in July 2023 after he split from OpenAI (he had been an early backer and board member). Headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area, with a massive Memphis training cluster ("Colossus") that the company claims is the world's largest single AI compute facility. Their model line is called Grok. It matters because xAI built one of the largest GPU training clusters in the industry in record time and has positioned Grok as a model with "less filtering" — Musk has marketed it as more willing to engage controversial topics than competitors. The company also benefits from direct, real-time access to X (Twitter) data for training and product integration. Key products: Grok 1, 2, 3, 4 (each successive release closing the gap with frontier US labs), Grok app, deep integration into X (the chatbot is available natively to subscribers), and image generation via Aurora. Grok 1 was open-sourced; later versions are mostly proprietary. xAI is somewhat polarizing — fans cite its willingness to be edgier and its rapid iteration; critics point to repeated public controversies over Grok generating problematic content. Where it sits among the top labs is still being negotiated by benchmarks. Related: Elon Musk, OpenAI, frontier model.
