Moonshot AI

A Beijing AI startup founded by Yang Zhilin in 2023, creator of the Kimi chat assistant — known for very long context (200k Chinese characters) and strong consumer adoption.

Moonshot AI (月之暗面) is a Beijing-based AI startup founded in 2023 by Yang Zhilin (楊植麟), a young Chinese AI researcher and Tsinghua / CMU alum. The company's flagship product is Kimi (Kimi智能助手), a Chinese-language AI assistant that became one of the most-used consumer chatbots in mainland China. It matters because Moonshot was an early Chinese leader on long-context — Kimi launched supporting 200,000-character (about 200k Chinese tokens) input long before most Western models had similar capability. That made it a natural fit for academics, lawyers, and analysts who routinely need to reason over long Chinese documents. Moonshot has raised hundreds of millions in funding from Alibaba, Sequoia China, and others, valuing the company in the billions. Key products: Kimi assistant (web, app, browser extension), Kimi K1 / K1.5 / K2 (the underlying model), and an API. Kimi has been particularly strong on Chinese-document Q&A, summarization, and analysis tasks. Moonshot is one of China's "AI 6 dragons" (六小龍) — the six most-prominent generative AI startups, alongside Zhipu, Baichuan, MiniMax, 01.AI, and Stepfun. Competition between them is intense, and product quality / mainland market share differs sharply by use case. Related: Kimi family, long-context, Yang Zhilin, Zhipu AI.
