Model family

Kimi (family)

Moonshot AI's Kimi LLM family — Kimi K1, K1.5, K2 — known for long-context Chinese document handling and powering the popular Kimi consumer assistant.

Kimi is the LLM family from Moonshot AI, the Beijing startup founded by Yang Zhilin. The model line — Kimi K1, K1.5, K2 — powers the Kimi consumer chat assistant (Kimi智能助手), which became one of the most-used AI chatbots in mainland China. It matters because Kimi was an early Chinese leader on long-context handling. The consumer Kimi assistant launched supporting 200,000-character (about 200k Chinese-token) input long before most other consumer chatbots had similar capability. That made it a natural choice for Chinese students, researchers, lawyers, and analysts who routinely need to reason over long documents in Chinese. The K2 generation (announced 2024-2025) reportedly increased context further and improved code/agent capabilities. Kimi K1.5 introduced reasoning extensions that compete with o1-style approaches. The models are accessible mostly through the Kimi consumer product (web, app, browser extension) and through Moonshot's API for enterprise customers. Kimi is generally not released as open weights — the family is commercial. For Chinese-language consumer chat, especially document-heavy use cases, Kimi has been one of the more recognizable brands in mainland China.
