Google's AI research lab — formed in 2023 by merging DeepMind (London) and Google Brain — creator of AlphaGo, AlphaFold, and the Gemini model family.

Google DeepMind is the unified AI research arm of Alphabet, formed in April 2023 by merging two existing groups: DeepMind (London-based, founded 2010, acquired by Google 2014) and Google Brain. The merger consolidated Google's AI talent under one organization led by Demis Hassabis, the original DeepMind co-founder. It matters because the lab is one of the most accomplished AI research organizations in history. AlphaGo (2016) beat the world's top Go player; AlphaFold (2018, 2020) solved protein structure prediction (Hassabis won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for it); the Transformer architecture was published by Google Brain (2017). On the LLM front, the Gemini model family is Google's frontier offering, competing directly with GPT and Claude. Key products and contributions: Gemini (1.0, 1.5 with 1M context, 2.0 multimodal, 2.5 reasoning), AlphaFold and DeepMind's biology work, AlphaProof (math olympiad-level math reasoning), the original Transformer paper, T5, PaLM, and the Pathways system that underlies Gemini. Google DeepMind has the deepest research bench in AI, but historically struggled to ship products as quickly as OpenAI. Bard / Gemini App / Gemini API have closed much of that gap.
